SPOILERS - The Future of the DC Universe

Image
From Michael Walsh for Nerdist JAMES GUNN ANNOUNCES FIRST SLATE OF TV SHOWS AND MOVIES FOR THE DC UNIVERSE Dwayne Johnson was right when he said, “The hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change.” He was just wrong about who would end up on top. Power now rests in the hands of new co-heads of DC, James Gunn and Peter Safran. We’ve wondered what their ascension would mean for the superhero franchise since the moment they got hired. But we don’t have to wait any longer. Gunn has announced “Chapter 1” of projects in a unified DC universe, or what is known as the DCU. Gunn shared the plan for the new DC Universe that he and Safran have devised for the first 8-10 years of their regime. That will include a space for other projects that don’t fall under the main DC Universe purview. Films like The Batman Part 2, Teen Titans Go, and Joker: Folie à Deux will fall under the DC Elseworlds banner, same as in DC comics. Movies already in the works like Shazam: Fury of the Gods, T...

Review - The Witches of Hollywood (2020) 6 out of 10 Broom Sticks

Image
By Wendy Chiles for Bitch Goddesses Also known as Les sorcières à Hollywood , it was directed and written by Sophie Peyrard, who you may know from her stellar documentary from 2022 about Patti Smith. The Witches of Hollywood explores the archetypes in cinema from the 1930s to the present and how it is linked to the social history of female power, starting with the Malleus Maleficarum . Wikipedia/Disney Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , The Wizard of Oz , My Beloved Witch , Suspiria , The Craft , Practical Magic , Maleficent - Producer Ulf Kjell Gür states, "The portrayal of the witch on the screen oscillates between fascination and dread. She symbolizes the woman who does not fit into the norm: too old, too eager, too learned, too sexy. Drawing on numerous excerpts, the film questions what the witch says about each era and tells, in watermark, a social story of female power, often crushed, sometimes glorified." Cartoons Betty Boop, Felix the Cat, then flowing into the grou...

Image
By Wendy Chiles for Bitch Goddesses JEFFREY GREENBERG/UCG/UNIVERSAL IMAGES GROUP VIA GETTY IMAGES During the 2021-2022 school year, more than 1,600 books were banned from American school libraries, according to a report from PEN America, an organization dedicated to protecting free expression in literature.  And the number of bans are only increasing.  64 titles (4%) include characters and stories that reflect religious minorities, such as Jewish, Muslim and other faith traditions.  Currently, Texas and Florida lead the nation in book bans, but what are the most commonly banned books about Paganism and Witchcraft in America? Here are the top banned Witchy books in America from the 2021-2022 school year, according to PEN America. Some have overlapping themes with Witchcraft or the Occult such as LGBTQ+ characters. In the hierarchy of banning reasons, LGBTQ+ issues do appear to trump Witchcraft, though combining them is serious anathema. _________________________...

Coming Soon - Good Omens Series 2 - Here's Everything We Know So Far

Image
By Wendy Chiles for Bitch Goddesses  Premiere Date: Summer 2023 When the second season began filming, creator Neil Gaiman said in a statement that demon Crowley (David Tennant) and angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) will have “new adventures with old friends” and “solve some extremely mysterious mysteries” while encountering “some entirely new humans (living, dead, and otherwise), angels, and demons.” ""It's thirty-one years since ‘Good Omens’ was published, which means it's thirty-two years since Terry Pratchett and I lay in our respective beds in a Seattle hotel room at a World Fantasy Convention, and plotted the sequel. I got to use bits of the sequel in Good Omens -- that's where our angels came from. Terry's not here any longer, but when he was, we had talked about what we wanted to do with ‘Good Omens,’ and where the story went next." And now, thanks to BBC Studios and Amazon, I get to take it there. I have enlisted some wonderful collaborators, and J...

Agatha: Coven of Chaos Set Photo Sparks Speculation About Title Change

Image
By Felipe Rangel for Screen Rant A new set photo from Marvel Studios' upcoming Disney+ series, Agatha: Coven of Chaos seems to hint at a new title for the Kathryn Hahn show. Joe Locke/Instagram Kathryn Hahn is set to return as Agatha Harkness in the upcoming Disney+ series titled Agatha: Coven of Chaos, or so was thought, as a new set photo seems to imply there has been a quiet title change behind-the-scenes. Hahn first played the character, a powerful witch disguised as a nosy neighbor, in 2021's WandaVision. In the series, Agnes — Agatha's fake identity — got close to Wanda in order to use her powers as the prophesied Scarlet Witch. However, things did not turn out the way the villain intended, with Wanda meddling with Agatha's memory and leaving her trapped in Westview — as Agnes — at the end of the show. Agatha: Coven of Chaos actor Joe Locke shared on his Instagram stories a set photo from the series, which teases a possible retitle of the show — Agnes of Westview....

North Catholic counselor loses job after students get crystals from self-proclaimed witches

Image
BY Andy Sheehan for CBS Pittsburgh KDKA Pittsburgh PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A coven of self-proclaimed witches and crystals with alleged special powers led to a local Catholic high school counselor apparently losing her job.  The women who own Elemental Magick in Sewickley identify themselves as witches. Nonetheless, they were invited to speak at a local Catholic high school, resulting in a firestorm pitting Catholic versus pagan beliefs. The three women say they're Wiccans -- a coven of witches -- and for the past seven years, they've been selling crystals, skulls and scented candles they believe to be imbued with special powers from their store. But contrary to popular impressions, these witches say they conjure no dark forces. Andy Sheehan: "There's no devil worship going on here."  Tabitha Latshaw: "No absolutely, we don't believe in that. We worship as Wiccans. We worship nature. So our elements -- earth, air, water and fire -- that's what we worship...
